How this calculator works

Credit utilization is the share of your available revolving credit that you are using. For each card it is the balance divided by the credit limit; overall it is the total of all balances divided by the total of all limits.

Credit scoring models consider utilization, and lower is generally viewed more favorably. A figure under 30% is a commonly cited rule of thumb, not a guarantee of any score. Different scoring models weigh it differently.

Formula

Utilization = total balances ÷ total credit limits × 100. Amount to pay down = total balances − (target % × total limits).

Things to keep in mind

  • Issuers usually report your balance once a month, often on the statement date, so the balance that gets reported may be higher than what you owe on the payment due date.
  • This tool only does arithmetic on the numbers you enter. It does not look up or predict your credit score.
